What You Need To Know About Masks

Divers and snorkelers use a mask in order to view the underwater environment.  Masks enable vision underwater by creating an air space between your eyes and the water.

Scuba diving and snorkeling masks typically have three main components: the lens or lenses, the skirt and the strap.

Mask lenses are generally made from tempered glass, providing a strong, clear view.  Masks have either a single forward lens or two forward lenses.  Some masks also have side windows, which increase peripheral (side) vision.

Most mask skirts are made of silicone, which is more comfortable than rubber and provides a better seal to keep water out. Clear silicone masks allow maximum light penetration, providing the diver with a more "open space" feeling. Black silicone is often preferred by underwater photographers, because it helps to eliminate glare and distractions.

Standard mask straps are also made of silicone, generally matching the skirt material and color.  Although standard straps are functional, many divers prefer the comfort and durability of soft neoprene mask straps that are available separately.

Purge masks have a small one-way valve that simplifies mask clearing for some divers.  Some masks also have pre-made vision correction/magnification lenses or inserts available.
