Semi-dry snorkels use a vented cap at the top of the snorkel barrel to deflect water that might enter the snorkel. A semi-dry snorkel may be preferred by those who wish to minimize water entry into their snorkel while at the surface.
Dry snorkels use a buoyant valve at the top of the snorkel that closes when submerged to prevent water from entering the snorkel when making a free dive. The valve automatically re-opens when you return to the surface, allowing the diver or snorkeler to resume breathing from a clear snorkel.
Although standard keepers included with snorkels are functional, many divers and snorkelers prefer the comfort and durability of neoprene snorkel keepers available separately.
