What You Need To Know About Fins

Divers and snorkelers use fins to move themselves through the water, both on the surface and underwater.  Fins increase the foot's surface area, which provides greater forward thrust that allows the diver to move more efficiently through the water.

There are two basic fin designs: Adjustable Open Heel fins and Full Foot fins.

Adjustable Open Heel fins have an open foot pocket with adjustable fin straps.  The ability to adjust the size of the foot pocket provides the diver or snorkeler with the ability to use thinner or thicker boots, depending on the level of thermal protection required.

Adjustable Open Heel fins are generally larger and stiffer than Full Foot fins in order to provide the necessary propulsion to offset the additional drag created when wearing scuba equipment.  For these reasons, Adjustable Open Heel fins are usually preferred by scuba divers. Most scuba diving open heel fins come equipped with rubber fin straps. Many divers prefer spring straps, due to their durability and "self-adjusting" capability.

Full Foot fins have a molded foot pocket that surrounds the entire foot and are not adjustable.  Therefore, they must be purchased according to the foot size of the user.  Full Foot fins are generally worn barefoot or with a light lycra or neoprene sock, which typically do not provide much, if any, thermal protection.   Full Foot fins are generally smaller and less stiff than Adjustable Open Heel fins.  These fins are primarily used by snorkelers.
