What You Need To Know About Regulators

The purpose of a scuba regulator is to reduce the pressure of the air in the tank to breathing pressure, which varies depending on the diver's depth.  The first stage of the regulator attaches to the tank and reduces the pressure of the air in the tank to a preset intermediate pressure, typically 140-160 psi.  The second stage of the regulator, which the diver breathes from, reduces the intermediate pressure to the water pressure surrounding the diver, so that it can be breathed underwater.

Regulator first stages typically have 1-2 high pressure ports for pressure gauges and 3-4 low pressure ports for the second stage, octopus, BCD inflator and dry suit hoses.

All regulators offered by Dive Pro are available with a standard yoke style first stage, which is by far the most common style in use.  Some regulators are also available with a DIN style first stage, which requires a DIN style tank valve with threaded connection.  DIN style regulators are typically used with high pressure steel tanks.

Some regulators are also pre-cleaned at the factory for use with up to 40% Nitrox, or enriched air, which contains higher than normal levels of oxygen.  Nitrox use requires special training and certification.  A Nitrox-compatible regulator requires a Nitrox-compatible octopus or alternate.

If you are purchasing multiple regulator components, such as a regulator, octopus, LP inflator hose and gauge console, your regulator set can be fully assembled and tested at no charge by a certified scuba instructor at Dive Pro before it is shipped to you. Simply select the "Assemble & Test" option when you select your regulator.
