What You Need To Know About Dive Gear Bags

Getting your dive gear from your home to your dive destination, or getting your dive gear from your hotel room to the dive boat, requires a gear bag.  And there are different gear bags for different situations.  In selecting a gear bag, you should consider the following factors:

Travel bags are typically larger, sturdier gear bags used for transporting your dive gear from your home to your dive destination.  These are constructed from heavier, more durable materials and are typically designed to protect your dive gear from the hazards of air travel.  Larger travel bags can hold two sets of warm water dive gear.

Mesh bags are typically lighter gear bags used for transporting your dive gear from your home or hotel room to the dive boat or dive site.  They are constructed using a mesh fabric so that water drains easily from the bag after diving, allowing water to drain from your dive gear.

Backpack gear bags are one of the best ways to transport your gear.  After packing, you can carry your gear on your back, leaving your hands free for other items, check-in documents or other needs.  Both travel bags and mesh bags are available in a backpack style with or without wheels.  Large backpack gear bags can hold two sets of warm water dive gear.

Duffel gear bags are the most common style of dive gear bag and are typically the lowest cost.  Duffel gear bags come in a variety of sizes and styles, so finding a duffel gear bag to meet your needs is very easy.  Both travel bags and mesh bags are available in a backpack style with or without wheels.  Large duffel gear bags can hold tow sets of warm water dive gear.

Roller bags have durable wheels built-in that allow you to roll the bag through the airport, hotel, etc. rather than having to carry your gear.  Roller bags typically also have retractable handles that extend when needed and are tucked away when the bag is handled manually.  Roller bags typically also have duffel-style carrying handles for those times when you need to lift your gear bag.  Gear bags with rollers are available in both backpack style or duffel style.

Specialty gear bags are also available to protect specific types of dive gear.  Mask bags, fin bags and regulator bags are all designed to protect those items from damage during transport or between dives.

Dry bags do just that ... they are specialty gear bags constructed with waterproof materials and a waterproof closure.  Divers typically use dry bags to keep their clothing, mobile phones, documents such as passports, and other items dry while diving, either on the dive boat or even taking them underwater if diving from shore.  Dry boxes are hard shell containers that serve the same purpose as dry bags, but also provide a solid case to protect fragile items, such as dive cameras, during storage or transport.
