What You Need To Know About Dive Computers

Dive computers are becoming more and more popular because of their increasing capabilities at lower and lower costs.  Dive computers provide scuba divers with the ability to manage their diving activities in real time, while underwater, as well as automatically track many dive factors that would require much more effort to track manually.

Dive computers can provide longer bottom times and safer diving by monitoring the divers actual activity, decompression status, ascent rates and other factors that contribute to a safer diving experience.

Dive computers typically come in two primary types: wrist computers and console computers.  Which style of computer you use depends on personal preference and the nature of your diving and dive gear.

With a wrist dive computer, a separate submersible pressure gauge (SPG) and compass are still required.  These may or may not be mounted together in a console.  With a console mounted dive computer, the computer will be mounted in an instrument console, with or without other instruments, depending on the divers gear and preferences.  Dive computer consoles typically have mating compasses available that can be attached to the console.  Many dive computers can simply be inserted into the depth gauge pocket in a standard instrument console.

Nitrox dive computers typically can be used for either air or Nitrox mixtures up to 40% or richer.  By programming the Nitrox mix into the dive computer, decompression limits are automatically adjusted for the breathing gas being used.  Most newer dive computers are Nitrox programmable.
