What You Need To Know About Nitrox

Nitrox is becoming more and more popular because of the desire for longer bottom times and/or an extra margin of safety when diving with air computers or air tables. Nitrox, also known as Enriched Air Nitrox or EANx, for recreational divers is air that has been "enriched" by increasing the oxygen content up to 40%, with a corresponding decrease in the nitrogen content.

Nitrox can provide divers with increased bottom time compared to air, because nitrogen intake is reduced. However, there are potential hazards associated with use of Nitrox, so divers should never use Nitrox without proper training and Nitrox certification by a recognized diver training agency. Because of the increased oxygen content in Nitrox, special procedures are required.

Nitrox-compatible regulators and octopuses/alternates are generally ready for use with Nitrox gas mixes up to the recreational limit of 40% oxygen content.  Special cleaning and lubricants are required for use with gas mixes containing more than 40% oxygen.

Nitrox dive computers typically can be used for either air or Nitrox mixtures up to 40% or richer.  By programming the Nitrox mix into the dive computer, decompression limits are automatically adjusted for the breathing gas being used.  Most newer dive computers are Nitrox programmable.

Nitrox analyzers, also known as oxygen analyzers, are used to verify the oxygen percentage in the Nitrox that is in your scuba tank.  As a Nitrox diver, you are responsible for personally verifying your breathing gas prior to diving.  For more technical diving using Tri-Mix, an oxygen-helium-nitrogen gas blend, Tri-Mix analyzers are also available.  Both types of analyzers use sensors to determine the percentage of oxygen or helium in the tank.  Oxygen sensors typically have a working life of 3-5 years or longer and helium sensors typically have a working life of 8-10 years or longer.

Accessories for Nitrox diving include special identification stickers/bands for scuba tanks filled with Nitrox, oxygen-compatible (Viton) O-rings and special oxygen-compatible lubricants.
